International Association of Machinists

The IAM was founded on May 5, 1888 in Atlanta, Georgia, by nineteen railroad mechanics led by Thomas Talbot. The IAM organization sought to improve wages, working conditions, and job security during the industrial boom of the late 19th century. As the labor movement grew, the IAM expanded beyond railroads and now representing over 600,000 workers across various industries. Local 2198 is proudly administered by District 141 and 142.
